Choosing the right conditions to fly certainly makes a difference and the Devil’s Dyke did not disappoint. With a strong wind blowing from north of North West, I was confident that I would soar and avoid another trip to the bottom landing field.

I was assisted to launch, hang checked and received one final brief before I launched. My glider appeared to go up more than it did forward and I was soon beating back and forth in front of the pub. Others ventured down the ridge towards Truleigh Hill but after I crossed the bowl and set off on the main northerly ridge, I only pushed as far as the Pylons. I had clearly remembered John’s advice that you really need to be pilot rated before going on an XC.

Contempt with a proper soaring flight, I returned to the Paddock, lined up into wind and slowly descended into the Paddock for a gentle top landing [the Calypso descends like a brick when you pull the bar in!].
