Way back in 1990 whilst I was employed as a lifeguard at Frome Sports Centre I was asked to paint something in the bar to make it look bigger. This page briefly talks about what I did as a result of this request!
At the time, the bar was crammed into a small corner of the sports centre building. There were no windows or any sources of natural light so it was basically a dreary place to be. I was somewhat purplexed with what I could do to make the room look bigger. Bright colours may have worked but that wasn't very interesting. It was then I had the idea of using a little trick of the camera to project the room into the wall using a perspective trick.
Essentially what I aimed to do was to project the room pictorially into the wall so when viewed from a certain viewpoint, the room would appear to look deeper. This meant I had to paint on the wall what the viewer would see if the room were larger. The images below were the result.
Sadly, 6 months after this work was completed it was decided that there wasn't enough revenue being generated by the bar so it was closed and turned into a gym. The redecorating that followed saw the demise of this painting and as far as I know, these images are the only record left of it!
Since then the gym became increasingly popular and was later extended into the spectator area leaving no evidence of the bar and painting that once existed there!
