THE KAYAK PADDLE
The kayak paddle is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment
you use whilst kayaking. This document talks about design features of the kayak
paddle and discusses typical applications for each design.
BLADE SHAPES
|
Symmetric Blade
Symmetric Blades are all round general purpose and are idea for novices. The large
surface area provide good support when required. |
|
Asymmetric Blade
More efficient than the symmetric blade design but with a reduced surface area doesn't provide
as much support. The design of this blade allows the blade to cleanly enter and exit the
water resulting in greater efficiency.
|
|
Teardrop Blade
Normally used for marathon and race paddling. The design of this blade is efficient at moving
large volumnes of water.
|
BLADE CROSS SECTIONS
|
Flat Blade
Flat Blades are the cheapest to manufacturer and are popular with novices. Flat blades
are easy to control in the water but lack the grip on water and are likely to
flutter as the paddler applies power. |
|
Dihedral Blades
|
|
Spoon Blades
Spoon shaped blades generate a powerful stroke for speed and control.
|
|
Wing Blades
Wing Blades are so called because of the wing like shape. When paddling the plade
actually generates lift in the same way as an aircraft wing propelling the boat
forward. These blades are generally used for sprint as they are very good at forward
speed and straight line paddling.
