The Sawmill is situated ½ a mile off the A24 London to Worthing road, just south of the village of Capel.
The sawmill as of August 2003 was set in a site of around 0.7 acre and was a single storey timber framed structure with clay roof tiles. The building had minor structural cracking on its north and south end walls. Rumour has it that a bomb fell close to the building during the Second World War.
In 1994 the building was purchased by Chase EMC Ltd and converted to office and laboratories. Inside the building, on the ground floor, anechoic chambers were constructed. The surrounding land was also used as an open-air test site (OATS).
In 1997 Chase EMC ltd was purchased by Schaffner and became Schaffner Chase EMC. In 1999 the company reorganised and became Schaffner EMC Systems Ltd, and continues to trade with that name today.
Sadly this looks like the last piece of information I'll be adding about the Saw Mill. In 2005 I ceased employment with Schaffner and a short while afterwards (nothing to do with my departure I hope), Schaffner closed the Saw Mill resulting in some redundancies. Some of the remaining staff were to be based at the Wokingham office and others were to work from home. The Saw Mill itself continues to be leased by Schaffner until March 2006, thereafter it is likely that the building be put up for sale.
Below I've collected a few historical images that may be of interest.
