Carisbrooke Castle is an 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by William fitz
Osbern. In the 12th century, the de Redvers family founded the stone castle, which is visible today.
Built on top of Wihtgarsburh Saxon Burh, George Carey, second Lord Hunsden, surrounded the castle with
Elizabethan defenses designed to withstand artillery.
